When her foster father dies and mysteriously vanishes from collective memory, orphaned healer-in-training Navaemah must put her dream of becoming a Daughter of the Earth in the revered Order of the Sand aside to search for answers. She discovers that things (and people) are not what they seem, and every clue leads to more questions. Worse still, the evil spread by the usurper King Goar and his dark wizard has corrupted her beloved Order, and unbeknownst to her, her life is in danger. She and her honorary uncle, the taciturn and secretive mercenary dwarf Theold “Gruff” McDermott, aided by companions they meet along the way, learn a secret that, if wielded wisely, could rid the world of evil and restore peace and prosperity — but, in the wrong hands, would spell disaster for millions of innocent people and all those she loves.
